The scent of sausage is in the air and Jack Russell, dog detective, is on the case.

Darrel and Sally Odgers brings readers a new book in the Jack Russell: Dog Detective series. In The Sausage Situation (Kane/Miller Book Publishers, ISBN: 978-1-933605-54-8), book 6, we meet again with all of our favorite characters: Jack Russell, Auntie Tidge, Foxy, Caterina Smith, and Lord Red.

The Plot

Sniff-sniff. Jack Russell lifts his nose and takes a whiff. Sausages! He and Foxy, the dog next door, run over to Auntie Tidge’s house. Sure enough, there’s a sausage truck out front and a man delivering a stack of boxes full of sausages.

Foxy, a fox terrier, jumps up and one of the boxes of sausages lands on the ground. Foxy knows his doggy rights. He gets to eat whatever food falls on the ground. He begins to gobble up the sausages. “No!” Auntie Tidge wrestles the box of fallen sausages away from Foxy.

What are all the sausages for? Foxy and Jack Russell aren’t sure, but when Caterina Smith shows up in Auntie Tidge’s house and takes the sausages away, Jack is almost certain he’s on a case involving the stolen sausages.

Following Caterina, Jack arrives at a special outdoor event, Dog and Sausage Day. Jack is so relieved. Caterina Smith is not a sausage thief after all. Foxy arrives with Auntie Tidge and Jack tells him that the sausage situation is under control. But Foxy refuses to believe that “his” sausages are safe. Foxy is so certain that someone will steal the sausages that he posts himself outside the sausage tent.

Is there a sausage thief roaming around the Dog and Sausage Day event or is Foxy just being paranoid? Could there be skullduggery going on? Only Jack will be able to solve his latest case, The Sausage Situation.

Recommended

Whether your child loves dogs or mysteries, the Jack Russell: Dog Detective series will catch his attention. Each book is filled with the excitement of discovering a new case to be solved. However, this latest book, The Sausage Situation, is like none of the other books in the series. The story twists and turns, getting readers to guess and second-guess the outcome.

Written for ages 8 and up, The Sausage Situation is a friendly book filled with wonderful line drawings of Jack Russell, his friends, and their adventures. There are also doggy facts, called Jack’s Facts, scattered throughout each Jack Russell book. These funny little blurbs give readers insight into how dogs think and why they behave the way they do. For example, in The Sausage Situation, Jack states that “[i]f a Jack Russell terrier wheezes, it is sick. If a pug wheezes, it is just being a pug. That is a fact.”
