Read the exciting adventures of Freddy, the ever-escaping hamster.
Freddy isn’t like the other golden hamsters in the pet store. For one, he asks too many questions and thinks about things far more than a hamster should. He also doesn’t like the hustle and bustle, not to mention the bites, of his ever-bouncing siblings.
There has got to be more to life than being trapped inside a cage, and so, armed with a bit of knowledge about humans, Freddy is determined to be purchased by the next person who peers into the hamster cage.
Looking cute and doing somersaults, Freddy finds himself a new family. His new cage is clean and the food is good. Even his new owner, a young girl named Sophie, is wonderfully sensitive to Freddy’s basic needs. However, there is one problem: the mom.
Sophie’s mom does not want a hamster, or any pet, in the house. Mom gets her way when she gets an allergic reaction to the hamster. Freddy’s got to go.
Freddy finds himself in a new home. There’s Sir William the tomcat and two crazy guinea pigs, Enrico and Caruso. There’s also Mr. John, the human, who seems to know that Freddy is not just an ordinary hamster.
I, Freddy by Dietlof Reiche (Scholastic Paperbacks, ISBN-10: 0439283574) is a fun story for children ages 9-12. Written in the words of Freddy, the story is exciting and, for anyone who has ever owned a hamster or even a guinea pig, downright hilarious.
This is a great book for children who own a hamster and can relate to how their little pets can be such great escape artists.
